My puppy is jumping on me.It is natural, they want to smell you better -- your genital area and your mouth. Most people say, "oh, they love me so much, they are jumping on me." It is unwanted behavior and you have to communicate, "no". Then ignore it and turn your back. When the dog's feet first leave the ground, quickly turn your back on the dog. As the dog paws at your back or legs, ignore it completely. Do not even look at it. If it circles around in front of you and jumps up again, turn your back again. Continue doing this until the dog chooses a more desirable behavior, such as sitting, standing still, or even turning to leave. The instant this happens, immediately turn your attention to the dog and praise and pet them. Large breeds, it is a real problem once the puppy grows to a certain size. Then simply hold your knee out.... then when they jump, on the way back down they meet the knee in the chest. Might frighten them, "Hey, the knee is not supposed to be there... but if it is... well I will stop jumping." Dachshund FAQs . . . |
